SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO @ VOYEUR

Voyeur. Oh, Voyeur. You’re Philadelphia’s dance-castle of royal queerness. You’ve got a sound system that can and does blow the pants off of nearly every man that struts his ass into your front doors. Your dancefloor serves Covergirl realness and vogue battles so serious that I thought some poor boy fell and split his head open on your hardwood, and then realized he was just doing a dip.  As I watched him continue Beyonce choreography on the ground, masterfully flailing like a little glittery butterfly ready for take off, I could see how Simian Mobile Disco would be thrilled to play here. It was brilliant.

It was then that I realized I’d been tricked. Simian  Mobile Disco was not DJing for this beautiful queer kingdom, oh no. This worldwide renounced dynamic duo was playing in Voyeur’s basement, a smokey yet sexy dungeon jam packed with grungy Cooltisans holding a PBR in each hand at all times. It was almost as if the the bouncer knew at the door — Glittery goddess? Upstairs you go. Plaid shirt with cigarette holes? TO THE DUNGEON I SAY.

Being the stereotypical plaid-wearing lesbian that I am, the bouncer soon corralled me amidst the heard of hipsters and I walked down the steps to a small room where the smells were horrendous (there was a hot dog rotisserie next to the DJ booth, oh so phallic and appropriate) but the sounds were Incrediballs. While many spent their first three hours slamming $1 Pabsts’ until their sentences sounded like word-soup, the true ragers were on the floor from start to finish poppin off ceiling tiles. Truth, try to rage in a basement where you put your hands in the air and you’re rearranging the roof.

Regardless, Simian you killed it, and here’s some photos of the shit-show taken by  the lovely Travis Mease, because I was too drunk on shitty beer by 2 am when Simian finally went on to be functional with my camera (Not to mention, Voyeur, you didn’t have my credentials/ photo pass at the door, so shame on you). May I suggest playing Where’s Waldo while looking through the images and trying to spot a nice beer amongst all the Pabst.
