An evening of Rock Funk Jamtronica at Milkboy
Last night started with The Space Cats. They recently opened for Jazz is Phish at Ardmore Music Hall, and got the evening going with a tight set at Milkboy last night. They specialize in improvisation, but the songs they played last night seemed more composed than free form. Their frequent rhythm changes made some of the numbers interesting, but coming out of some slow dreamy jams, I would have liked a more driving dance beat compared to the straight rock beats that seemed more their style. They certainly helped us forget our post election blues and helped move us into the listening and dancing frame of mind.
I first hear Broccoli Samurai a few weeks ago at Suwanee Hulaween on a warm Florida afternoon, on the Campground stage in the Spirit Lake section of the park, an outdoor museum of art installations, interactive activity stations, and by night fire breathing metal sculpures and perfomance artists. But this Thursday pre-party day was mellow and my reaction to their music was that it was awesome, but might be better suited to an evening performance in a more focused space. So I was grateful for the opportunity to catch their set last night. They jump around genres, but mostly they rock fairly hard, and play a variety of interesting songs, some with strong jams mixed in.
Aqueous headlined, and was the only act of the three to have active stage lighting, which helped the atmosphere a lot. Milkboy’s dance floor area is very narrow and the stage is small, but having some good lighting makes it seem like more of an event compared to just a local band playing in a local bar. These guys played a great set that started with some straightforward rock songs, and built into some great jams with relentlessly repeating and building chord progressions and amazing guitar and keyboard work, supported by a solid rhythm section. Don’t miss a chance to see these guys. They got a crowd that had seemed tired, maybe lazy, and possibly still in shock over the election results dancing hard.
